  • Dexter: Final Episode In Sight

Posted on December 12, 2011 by PopFunk

Though Dexter fans are anxiously awaiting this week's Season Six finale, a new interview with show star Michael C. Hall was published today, covering, among other things, the inevitable curtain call for the series. That's right: the Dexter final episode is now in sight. Showtime formally announced that the series will continue through Season Eight, giving the show ample time to start building toward a fitting finale. Whether that will involve Dexter's bloody secret life finally being discovered, his ultimate demise, or nothing of the sort, Hall was not quick to say. "It seems like a reasonable thing to think, that things won't end well for the character. But there are no rules. I don't think there's anything we're obliged to say," he told Huffington Post. "I don't know if it's possible to conclude something that people have been spending this much time with in a way that is satisfying to everyone, and if that's your focus, it's going to be hard." He then remarked that they may just throw the audience a curveball, "Maybe he'll walk out and get hit by a bus. Beep! The end." That would surely stir a lot of our dark passengers. Good thing he's joking! Season Six of Dexter concludes this Sunday on Showtime -- a fine excuse to stock up on Popfunk's new Dexter shirts. Sport your favorite serial killer serial killer before he's gone for good.

However, New York Comic Con, SDCC’s East Coast counterpart since 2006, continues to make its bid for biggest US geek gathering with this weekend’s convention. Among the participating exhibitors staking a claim on the Jacob Javits Center this weekend are Activision, Capcom, Dark Horse, DC, Hasbro, Marvel and Mattel. Notable artists include Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Frank Miller and Kevin Smith. Also appearing to throughout the weekend will be Eliza Dushku, Mark Hamil, Rose McGowan, Jason Momoa, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, and the entire cast of Paramount’s upcoming Avengers movie. • Google Celebrates Jim Henson's 75th Birthday

Posted on September 28, 2011 by PopFunk

On September 24, The Jim Henson Company celebrated what would have been the 75th birthday of the famed puppeteer, producer, director and all-around visionary. In a unique collaboration with Google, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop built original digital puppets for the occasion, resulting in a custom Google Doodle – the company’s awesome, often interactive alternative front page logos. Google Doodle for Jim Henson's 75th Birthday. To go along with Doodle, Jim’s son Brian (who now runs the family business) wrote a poignant tribute to his father for the Google Blog.

“[Jim Henson] loved games—card games, board games, all kinds of games. He was one of those rare parents who was always ready to play again. He loved dogs, particularly goofy ones. And he lived for those moments when everyone laughed so hard they couldn’t talk. I often walked onto the Muppet set to find everyone just laughing hysterically.”

Thanks for the years of laughter, Jim. Happy 75th from Popfunk! Read More

  • Eureka Gets Cancelled

Posted on August 11, 2011 by PopFunk

This post is brought to you by the Eureka T-Shirt Collection at Popfunk.com and MTV Geek.
Reversing what it had said just last week, Syfy pulled the plug on Eureka, a playful science-fiction series that the channel has broadcast since 2006. Syfy cancels Eureka Last week, Syfy’s president of programming, Mark Stern, announced that there would be a six episode sixth season to wrap up the show – they’re currently running season 4.5, with season 5 currently in production; then yesterday, without mention of the previous decision, the Network announced the show would be ending with Season 5. Apparently there was a miscommunication. Inside a sprawling company like NBC Universal, which owns Syfy, giving the green light to a new season of a show requires approvals by many layers of bosses, and those approvals apparently had not been given. The whiplash alone shocked fans, not to mention the fact that, well, they kind of forgot to tell the actors. “I almost found out through Twitter.... unfortunately!” said actor Erica Cerra, who plays Jo Lupo on the series, when we contacted her to talk about the cancellation. “However in the nick of time, Bruce Miller, Jaime Paglia and Tod Sharp called and we had a great talk about how sad we are that this had to come to an end… We were not prepared to say goodbye, so soon. Still in a bit of shock.” Naturally, the fans themselves came out and immediately started a petition to keep the show going. One site, called Save Eureka has garnered 788 “Twitition” signatures so far, and we’re sure there are plenty more places to throw your hot dog into the well (that’s the expression, right?). Also, it’s only a matter of time before someone starts mailing SyFy some sort of integral part of the show en masse, like Roswell’s hot sauce. May we suggest Neil Graystons? The actors, on the other hand, seem somewhat resigned to the cancellation, though they won’t go happily into the night. In a pointed statement on his popular blog, Wil Wheaton – who plays Doctor Isaac Parrish on the show – chided the network for not letting the actors know before the press: "At this point, I know as much as you do, because I found out the same way you did,” said Wheaton. “I'm trying really hard not to be upset with the network for issuing a statement to the press before the cast knew, so we wouldn't have to find out the way we did; as you can imagine, it isn't exactly easy.” That all said, there is still a full season and a half of the show to go, including a Christmas Special in December. “Season four and five are some of the BEST work we've done,” said Cerra. “The fans will be thrilled.” And as for those fans, Cerra has a personal message for them: “I can't thank you enough for all your support and well wishes. You are patient fans with eight months between seasons, and still you come back to show us love.” Here’s a statement from Syfy: “After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012." Are you guys disappointed that Eureka has been cancelled?!? Comment below and let us know!

But we're grateful that we didn't have to do the extra work. Finally for your viewing pleasure: The Dark Knight Rises Official Trailer.

  • Star Trek Invades the iPad

STAR TREK PADD app - promo video from ArcTouch on Vimeo.

The future is now, as 24th century technology meets 21st century mobile devices in the form of a Star Trek PADD app. Available today from CBS Interactive, which developed it in conjunction with CBS Mobile and ArcTouch, the official Star Trek PADD (Personal Access Display Device) app features an impressive, interactive database of Star Trek television show information, ranging from characters and ships to alien worlds and an episode guide, as well as Star Trek images, including a faithful reproduction of the LCARS interface, plus a recognizable computer voice, familiar Star Trek sounds and more, all spanning from The Original Series to Star Trek: Enterprise. Additionally, fans can keep track of the latest Star Trek news and interact with fellow Star Trek fans from the official Star Trek Facebook page and Twitter, both of which are directly integrated into the apps. “Star Trek fans are passionately involved with all things Star Trek,” said Rob Gelick, SVP and GM, CBS Mobile. “Through this app, both die-hard Trekkers and casual show enthusiasts are able to delve into a rich array of computer sounds, images and Star Trek-related information.” Three particularly passionate Trek fans played pivotal roles in the inspiration of the Star Trek PADD App: Eric Shapiro, Denise Okuda and Michael Okuda. Shapiro, of ArcTouch, developed the app, while Michael Okuda was in charge of the computer interface designs of the Starships Enterprise as part of his job as scenic art supervisor and technical consultant on TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise, and Denise Okuda was a graphic artist and video/computer graphics supervisor on DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. “I am a huge Star Trek fan,” says Shapiro, who co-founded ArcTouch in 2009 with Adam Fingerman after a career spent at Apple, where they worked as product managers on what eventually became iOS. “My dad was a fan, and I think I’ve been watching Star Trek since I was born, which was two years after the original show started in 1966. I have been to several conventions and I’m lucky my wife is just as much of a fan. At my first startup, one of my employees got me the book Make It So: Leadership Lessons from Star Trek. I'm not saying I'm Captain Picard, but one can always dream.’ And why now for a Star Trek PADD app? “We came up with this proposal because, as Star Trek fans, with the launch of the iPad, technology finally hit the point where we could simulate the PADD device,” Shapiro replies. “Then the question was: how do we transport people today into that future universe, and that’s where the conversation with CBS began.” A highlight of the process came when Shapiro and the ArcTouch team offered a demonstration of the app to the Okudas. “(That) was one of the most nerve-wracking moments,” Shapiro recalls. “Michael was the official designer of the LCARS computers displays used in TNG, DS9 and Voyager. Getting Michael and Denise’s approval is a huge feather in our cap.” And, indeed, the Okudas were duly impressed. “My favorite part of the Star Trek PADD app?” Michael Okuda asks, repeating a question just posed to him. “I love being able to use a functional implementation of my LCARS interface style to browse through actual Star Trek information. Back when the PADD first appeared on TNG, none of us imagined that today we’d be able to hold the real thing in our hands. But the Star Trek PADD App, running on your iPad, is an actual miniature, handheld, touch-sensitive, 24th-century-style computer screen.” Adds Denise Okuda, “The Star Trek PADD app shows that yesterday’s visionary science fiction can become today’s real-world technology, thanks to the brilliance of today’s scientists, engineers, programmers, and designers. The Star Trek PADD app is a little piece of Star Trek’s future brought to life. It’s not only authentic Trek, but it’s fun, too.” The Star Trek PADD app can be purchased for $4.99 on the App Store for the iPad. Check out screenshots from the PADD below: Sound off: Do any of you Trekkies think you'll buy the app?  What do you think about the interface only being made available on the iPad and not on iPhone or Android devices?!
