The History of Batgirl
Batgirl is one of DC Comics’ most alluring female superheroes. Batgirl made her first appearance opposite Batman in 1961 as the Robin-like sidekick to Batwoman. This lady of the Gotham City night has been the title of two comic book series and two mini-series published by DC Comics. Fighting evil side-by-side with Batman and Robin, Batgirl was symbolic of the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s. Her image remained in comic books until 1988—when her character was gunned down by The Joker—though she reappeared briefly in 1996.
