The History of McHale's Navy
One of the first military comedies to appear television, McHale’s Navy invaded American TV sets in the fall of 1960. This ABC Comedy starring Ernest Borgnine as Lieutenant Commander Quinton McHale told the story of a former merchant ship captain who leads a rag-tag group of sailors aboard a Navy PT boat during World War II. In spite of their reputations as hustlers and connivers, McHale’s men are good at their jobs. Though it never received critical praise, McHale’s Navy ran for 138 episodes culminating in a made-for-TV movie called Seven Against the Seas. McHale’s Navy was remade as a movie in 1997 starring Tom Arnold as McHale.
