James Dean is an American Icon. Though he starred in just three films, the legend of James Dean still burns brightly today, more than 60 years since his death. Known for his tough-guy attitude and bad boy good looks, James Dean rose to stardom in the 1950s thanks his roles in two films: East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause. Rebel Without a Cause was his most celebrated film; in it, Dean played a troubled Los Angeles teenager, a role that reflected his own troubled past. James Dean was more celebrated in death than he was in life, becoming the first actor to receive a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Actor. James Dean suffered an untimely death in 1955 in a tragic car accident. He’s memorialized today in countless posters, pictures and clothing items that bear his image.
