The History of Emergency

One of the first television programs to combine action adventure with medical drama, Emergency! became an audience favorite not long after it debuted on NBC in 1972. This NBC spinoff of Adam-12 produced by Jack Webb—creator of Dragnet—revolves around the lives of two good-looking Los Angeles firemen/paramedics, John Gage and Roy DeSoto, of Fire Station 51. Randolph Mantooth famously played Gage on Emergency! As the first show to depict scenes of paramedics and doctors saving lives, Emergency! helped make the medical drama genre and encouraged the widespread establishment of paramedic programs across the country in the 1970s. It’s successful TV run lasted until 1977.
