The History of The Rockford Files
NBC changed the TV Detective Series genre forever with its 1974 debut of The Rockford Files. Jim Rockford, played by the iconic James Garner, wasn’t your average private investigator. After serving time in San Quentin for a crime he didn’t commit, Rockford relocated to the beaches of Malibu to solve cold cases for a fee of “$200 plus expenses.” The Rockford Files’ main character wears low-budget clothes, avoids fights, and rarely carries a gun. Fans of the show will remember Jim Rockford’s gold Pontiac Firebird Esprit, which was featured in many incredible chase scenes. The Rockford Files was cancelled in 1980 but lives on today in syndication.
