The History of Shazam
Shazam is a 6,000-year-old wizard first inserted into DC Comics in the 1940s. Recognized by his signature lightening bolt-emblazoned jumpsuit, Shazam is most well-known in comic lore for giving young Billy Batson the power to become DC superhero Captain Marvel, and the two are often mistaken for one another. But Shazam is a superhero all his own thanks to his incredible powers of magic. Although Shazam is killed by a giant block falling on him, Captain Marvel can summon the ghost of Shazam for guidance. Other DC superheroes carry on his legacy, including Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr. Shazam. These characters have made many on-screen appearances including roles in the “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” series and in the short film “Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam.”
